Laser cut keys have been around for a long time but were only used on high-end cars like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Recently these keys have been used on very common domestic car brands like Ford and Chevrolet. Hyundai and KIA have even started implementing laser cut keys! The term laser cut is an industry term that refers to keys that are cut on a CNC milling machine rather than a standard wheel type key cutting machine you see in hardware stores. Contrary to prior belief these keys are cut with a drill bit, NOT by lasers. For this purpose and for the fact that many of these key cuts resemble squiggly lines that are not cut all they way through the key blade, locksmiths, lock manufacturers and car brands call these types of keys ‘sidewinder keys’.
We cut a LOT of these laser cut types of keys for our customers, other locksmiths, and even most of the major car dealers as far as Kearney! If you need a spare sidewinder key cut and programmed for you or your customer’s car give us a call or stop by our shop. We also cut many keys bought from online sources like eBay, bring your keys to us for exact copies!
Here is an example of one of our machines cutting a spare sidewinder key to a late 80’s Mercedes-Benz.
